Most work places will hold flammable substances that have the potential to combust or explode.  These substances could be anything from a compressed flammable gas, fuels, dusts and powders to other items of equipment like a charging point for fork lift trucks. However, the common misconception is that these are assessed under the fire risk assessment, and in away they are but, have you considered DSEAR?

The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) should be a consideration of all businesses and where applicable either recorded as not necessary or assessed by a ‘Competent Person’ and recorded.

DSEAR follows a similar process of risk assessment with the addition of the following areas:

  • Hazard identification
  • Sources of ignition
  • Evaluation of risk
  • Measures to eliminate the/ reduce identified risks
  • Hazardous area zoning
  • Provisions of suitable equipment and safety systems
  • Information and training of employees

Assessed Risk Limited are deemed ‘Competent Persons’ and have received comprehensive training with the British Research Establishment to ensure that any assessment undertaken by us is suitable and sufficient for your businesses needs.
